The title Matenjagwo has a personal connection to Virusi Mbaya, whose real name is Peter Matenjagwa Waweru. The name is also associated with the Mau Mau fighter General Gitau Matenjagwo, who was a prominent leader during Kenya's fight for Independence. In Kikuyu, matenjagwo refers to those who do not shave.
