Effective 8 July 2026. Last updated 8 July 2026.
1. Who We Are
Welcome to LyFi. LyFi is a community platform for Kenyan music — lyrics, cultural annotations, artist information, and discussion across Sheng, Swahili, and other vernacular languages. This Privacy Notice explains what personal information we collect, why, how we use it, who we share it with, and your rights. It applies to lyfiapp.com and related services. By using LyFi, you confirm you have read and understood this Notice.
LyFi is operated from Kenya. To contact us about privacy, use the Contact page on lyfiapp.com.
2. Information We Collect
Information you give us: when you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address, and profile picture. You may also add a display name, nickname, bio, and avatar.
Content you submit: lyrics, annotations, comments, artist information, edits, and corrections you post to the platform.
Messages you send us through the Contact page.
Information collected automatically: your IP address, device and browser type, pages you view, and general usage, collected by our infrastructure providers for security and reliability.
3. How We Use Your Information
• Create and manage your account and sign you in.
• Display your profile, contributions, and reputation on the platform.
• Operate the contributor points and reputation system.
• Review and moderate submissions and prevent spam, abuse, and fraud.
• Send you service messages about your account or submissions.
• Understand and improve how the platform is used.
• Display sponsored or promotional content, which is clearly labelled. We do not run personalised advertising.
• Comply with our legal obligations.
4. Our Legal Basis
We process your information only when we have a valid reason: your consent; to provide the service you signed up for (running your account and contributions); our legitimate interests (keeping the platform secure and improving it); or to comply with a legal obligation. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time.
5. Cookies
We use essential cookies to keep you signed in and to operate core features, and functional cookies to remember basic preferences such as your settings. We do not use advertising cookies. You can control or delete cookies in your browser, though disabling essential cookies may prevent you from signing in.
6. Who We Share Information With
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only as needed:
• Service providers who run LyFi: Google (sign-in), Supabase (database and authentication), and Cloudflare (hosting and security). They process data on our behalf under their own terms.
• Public display: your display name, profile picture, contributions, and reputation are visible to others (see Section 8). Your email is not shown publicly.
• Legal and regulatory authorities, including the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) in Kenya, where required by law.
• Business transfers: if LyFi is merged, acquired, or sold, information may transfer as part of that transaction.
7. How Long We Keep Your Information
We keep account information for as long as your account is active. Public contributions may remain on the platform as part of its archive after your account is closed, in de-attributed form where reasonably possible, unless a legal obligation requires otherwise. Technical logs are kept for a limited period and then aggregated or deleted.
8. Your Contributions Are Public
LyFi is a public community platform. Your display name, profile picture, and contributions (lyrics, annotations, comments, edits) are visible to others and may appear in search-engine results. Please do not post information you wish to keep private.
9. Sending Information Outside Kenya
LyFi is based in Kenya but uses providers whose servers may be located in other countries. Where your information is transferred outside Kenya, we rely on providers that offer protections consistent with Kenyan law.
10. Your Rights
Subject to applicable law, you can: access a copy of your information; ask us to correct it; ask us to delete it; object to certain uses; and withdraw consent where we rely on it. To make a request, use the Contact page with the subject "Privacy Request" and include your username. We aim to respond within 21 days.
11. Age Requirement
LyFi is intended for users aged 18 or older. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a child under 18 has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
12. How We Protect Your Information
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information and rely on the security practices of our providers (Google, Supabase, Cloudflare). No system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
13. Links to Other Services
LyFi may link to or embed third-party services such as YouTube. We are not responsible for their privacy practices; please review their notices.
14. Changes to This Notice
We may update this Notice from time to time. We will post the updated version here and change the "Last updated" date.
